2019 FLOWERS SONOMA COAST CHARDONNAY

The heart of the winemaking philosophy at Flowers is for the wine to express its origin and promote the unique flavors of the rough, rugged, and remote coastal ridges of the Sonoma Coast. Three distinct qualities define the vineyards used to source their Chardonnay: extreme elevation, coastal influence, and sustainable farming practices that together create a haven for growing cool-climate varieties.

Winemaker Chantal Forthun believes in low intervention and uses a natural yeast strain from the skin of the grapes for fermentation, giving Flowers wines their particular characteristics. The 2019 vintage saw a cold, wet winter, followed by a mild spring and summer, resulting in moderate to slow ripening for delicate but complex layers of flavor with bright acidity and a pleasantly lingering finish. Our panel was thrilled with the quality of their 2019 Chardonnay, marking one of their best vintages yet, offering a stratospherically high level of quality for its value price.

2018 FLOWERS SONOMA COAST CHARDONNAY

Flowers designed their Chardonnay to delineate the distinct minerality and fresh, natural acidity created from coastal vineyards. Their team exercises minimal intervention in the cellar to promote a pure expression of the Sonoma Coast, resulting in a supremely balanced, elegantly focused Chardonnay, expressive of its origin.

Sourced from the winery’s own Camp Meeting Ridge Estate Vineyard reinforced with a selection of family-owned plots, chosen for their coastal influence, shared farming philosophies, and complimenting fruit characteristics, Flowers Chardonnay is perfectly balanced, layered, and expressive. Their natural winemaking style, extreme fruit standards, and top-level farming coincide, shaping this wine which has become a standard for California Coastal Chardonnay.

2020 FLOWERS SONOMA COAST ROSÉ

Flowers Winery designedly crafts their Rosé to highlight the distinct minerality and fresh acidity in this wine. Their team exercises minimal intervention in the cellar to promote a pure expression of the Sonoma Coast. This new release illustrates their commitment to expressing the uniqueness of their land as it excites your taste buds with striking pink grapefruit, saltwater minerals, sea breeze, and fresh acidity.

The winemaking team created their 2020 Pinot Noir Rosé from their Sea View Ridge Estate and selected family-owned vineyards on the Sonoma Coast, all properties sharing a pronounced coastal influence and aligning farming practices.

With attention to every detail, fruit is hand-sorted on the winery’s custom-built shaker table before six team members assess every cluster before allowing only the best fruit to pass through by gravity flow into the fermenters. The blend is 100% Pinot Noir and perfectly reflects the quality of fruit and meticulous care that goes into it.

2018 FLOWERS SONOMA COAST PINOT NOIR

Flowers is a winery dedicated to crafting elegantly balanced wines that express their vineyard’s authentic voice. They’re able to achieve this through organic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. As a result, their wines faultlessly showcase fresh coastal minerality, hallmark purity of fruit, and complex nuances derived from their land. The 2018 release is, as Jeb Dunnuck writes, “impeccably made and high-quality.”

Joan and Walt Flowers helped shape Pinot Noir production along the extreme Sonoma Coast and were among the first to plant grapes in the area known as the Fort Ross Seaview AVA. The region is also a source for such notables as Peter Michael, Marcassin, Martinelli, Fort Ross, and Pahlmeyer, to list a few.

With attention to every detail, Flowers hand-sorts their fruit on their custom-built shaker table before gently dispersing the berries onto the next sorting table where six sorters assess every cluster before allowing only the best fruit to pass through into the fermenters. At under fifty bucks, I highly recommend harvesting some for your cellar.

2017 FLOWERS SONOMA COAST CHARDONNAY

Flowers Chardonnay perfectly combines a seamless elegance with highly-expressive fruit characteristics, balanced with fresh, lively acidity.  It’s this undeviating style that’s led them to become one of the premier Chardonnay producers in the New World, and their new 94 Point Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is a brilliant example.

There’s a reason why many of California’s most iconic Chardonnay producers including Peter Michael, Marcassin, Martinelli, Fort Ross and Pahlmeyer all source fruit from the Fort Ross Seaview AVA.  The close proximity to the Pacific Ocean results in a long, cool growing season, which allows the grapes to reach their optimum potential.

Flowers hand-sorts their fruit on their custom-built shaker table before gently dispersing the berries onto the next sorting table, where six sorters assess every cluster before allowing only the best fruit to pass through into the fermenters.  It’s then gently transferred by gravity into small stainless steel tanks for fermentation, then French oak barrels for 12 months.  The 2017 vintage dramatically showcases all of the best hallmarks that I love about Flowers Chardonnay.
