2016 GROTH OAKVILLE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Defined by their commitment to consistency and continuity, Groth’s entire team’s intimate knowledge and trust in the vineyard’s capability, as well as their unwavering commitment to quality, kept them on the forefront as one of Oakville’s most classic producers for generations. Their Oakville Cabernet is a timeless classic, embodying legacy, superior fruit, land stewardship, and top-level winemaking, and at $60, the value is undeniable.

Initially planted by Silver Oak co-founder Justin Meyer in the early 70s, the Estate flanks paragons Plumpjack, O’Shaughnessy, and Bonny’s Vineyard and is just a short distance from BOND’s St Eden. Their team meticulously farms the vineyard, performing cluster thinning three times each vintage.

Pressed in their state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery and kept for nearly two years in barrel, Groth’s Oakville Cabernet is evolving beautifully since the team bottled it four years ago. The wine vividly expresses the vineyard’s hallmarks with supple fruit, depth, and escalating energy. It was not surprisingly one of THE best wines in our weekly tasting.

2015 GROTH OAKVILLE CABERNET SAUVIGNON (1.5L) MAGNUM

Groth is a top Oakville producer with a history of excellent wines, including the first domestic 100 point Parker wine, and eight features on the Wine Spectator top 100. Their Cabernet is also one of the most exceptional values in Oakville.. Every time I taste it, It reminds me of what classic Napa Cabernet tastes like, in a way that perfectly expresses the vintage and superior fruit.

The Estate sits on the Northeastern side of the appellation, flanked by paragons Plumpjack, O’Shaughnessy, and Bonny’s Vineyard, and is just a stones-throw from BOND’s St Eden vineyard. Their Oakville Cab includes both Estate fruit and grapes from partner growers in the region with similar flavor characteristics.

Pressed in their state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery, and kept for nearly two years in barrel, Groth’s Oakville Cabernet has evolved beautifully in the bottle over the last three years. The 2015 release has incredible detail and complexity, with a broad presence on the palate and excellent depth.

2016 GROTH RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Groth’s Reserve Cabernet represents the finest lots within the winery’s Reserve Block located on the coveted Northeastern side of Oakville. The area flanks paragons Plumpjack, O’Shaughnessy, and Bonny’s Vineyard, and is just a stones-throw from BOND’s St Eden. Their vineyard has a high concentration of compact sedimentary rock comprised of quartz crystals and fossils. When combined with an ideal climate, it produces a world-class Cabernet, which has been proven by eight features on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list, including this wine, which ranked #4 in 2019.

Groth’s vineyard is ideally located and meticulously farmed. Their team performs cluster thinning three times each vintage, and during harvest, they sort the fruit three times, assuring only the best berries make it through to their small lot fermentation tanks.

Groth divided their Reserve Blocks into eight separate lots, and of those, only the five best made it into their 2016 Reserve Cabernet. The 2016 release stayed in barrel for 22 months and now beautifully expresses all of the hallmarks that make Groth Cabernet so revered, with massive extract, a profoundly concentrated core, and notable delineation.

Rooted in Oakville, Groth’s Vineyard sits adjacent to the prized Bonny’s Vineyard, a vineyard made famous by Silver Oak in the 1980’s.  Pressed in their state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery, Groth’s Oakville Cabernet is kept for nearly 2 years in barrel.  Their 2014 is broad shouldered with a concentrated core lined in muddled blackberries, crushed charcoal, graphite, scorched earth, cassis and vanilla.  The 2014 is absolutely rocking right now and should evolve beautifully over the next decade.

It’s already earned an impressive 95 point rating from James Suckling, whose review suggests this may be the best Groth Reserve Cabernet in years… I highly recommend making some room in your cellar for this legendary Napa Valley wine.

2018 OAKVILLE WINEGROWERS THE OAKVILLE CUVEE CABERNET SAUVIGNON (750ML)

The Oakville Cuvée is the rarest significant wine produced in Napa Valley, representing the spirit of Oakville and the camaraderie of its vintners through a one-of-a-kind collaboration of the region’s finest wineries. Producing just 100 magnums and 50 double magnums, all etched and numbered, along with just a tiny amount of 750 ml bottles, the Oakville Winegrowers Association members contribute a small amount of their best wine, blended and bottled by a different member, with each winery/winemaker traditionally getting a 3-year tour of duty. The 2018 vintage was cellared and bottled by Russel Bevan at Tench winery and exemplifies the vintage and region’s most powerful characteristics.
