2016 HEITZ CELLAR LOT C-91 CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Joe Heitz pioneered single-vineyard wines in Napa Valley, and in 1969 he blended select plots from his most prized vineyards, discovering that he could create a wine with the qualities he desired most – aging potential, complexity, and depth. Lot C-91 encompasses this art of assemblage, gracefully presented with concentrated fruit, focus, and sophisticated complexity.

Heitz is a historic winery that continues to pursue the same traditional, age-worthy style for which they’re well known and respected. For the last 50 years, Heitz Cellar has sourced fruit for Lot C-91 from premium parcels in St. Helena, Oakville, Rutherford, and Howell Mountain, representing a step-up in quality, achieving the density and length of a genuinely fantastic wine, which recently earned an extraordinary score.

2017 HEITZ CELLAR NAPA VALLEY CHARDONNAY

Heitz Cellar crafts their Napa Valley Chardonnay in a clean and refreshing style that highlights the fruit’s purest expression. They’ve been perfecting their craft for nearly 60 years, and back in the 60s and 70s, they labeled their Chardonnay “Chablis.” In the 80s, they began bottling single-vineyard Chardonnays from Trailside and Heitz Vineyard. Their 2017 is a timeless classic that harkens to the old days of Napa Chardonnay with delicate details and outstanding balance.

The 2017 release combines fruit from Oak Knoll, Rutherford, St Helena, and Yountville. It highlights the rich, ripe fruit characteristics of the warmer climates up-valley and balances them with the structure and acid from the cooler Oak Knoll District.

Aged for an impressive three years in a combination of stainless steel, French oak, and in the bottle before release, the 2017 vintage is fresh and lively, offering vivid island fruits, Meyer lemon, toasted hazelnut, and Key lime. I strongly recommend a case of this classic Napa Chardonnay for your cellar.

2016 HEITZ NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Dedicated to classic winemaking, Heitz Cellar’s invariant style of producing profoundly hedonistic and age-worthy Cabernets is a hallmark of their brand. The winery has reliably produced its unmistakably intense, savory, well-built Cabernets since 1961. Their 2016 Napa Cabernet perfectly expresses their timeless approach, fusing power and elegance, enriched with history, and a desire to handcraft Cabernets at the highest level.

Joe Heitz had a keen eye for discovering vineyards capable of producing age-worthy wines. Their 2016 Napa Valley Cabernet showcases two Saint Helena Vineyards, Only One and Spring Valley, enhanced with a touch of Rutherford fruit.

Each decision made at the winery, from when to pick, through the entire fermentation and aging process, is purposefully made to guide the wine into a style that’s both stunning upon release and will stand the test of time, rather than be flashy and forward when consumed young.

2012 HEITZ TRAILSIDE VINEYARD CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Heitz is an absolutely historic winery that continues to craft wine in the same traditional and age-worthy style that they’ve become revered for almost 60 years.  Each decision made at the winery, from when to pick; through the entire fermentation and aging process are purposefully made to guide the wine into a style that will stand the test of time, rather than be flashy and forward when consumed young.  Why? You’ll find the answer in a bottle of 2012 Heitz Trailside Vineyard Cabernet… After resting for 3 long years in 100% oak, followed by another 3 years inside the bottle, the 2012 now awakes with penetrating dark fruits, powerful structure, unending depth and remarkable detail.  With the new 2013 vintage checking in at $125/btl, the 2012 is a stunning value, that shouldn’t be missed at $79.99/btl.

The Trailside Vineyard, located in the Iconic Rutherford AVA, made it’s debut in 1989 and they’ve produced a bevy of high-scoring Cabernets from this vineyard ever since.  The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and made it’s entrance from one of Napa Valley’s most desired vintages. I highly recommend saddling up and securing your case…

2013 MIDSUMMER CELLARS “CLARK-CLAUDON VINEYARD” CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Rollie Heitz is another prime example of world-class winemaking being passed down through genetics in his Midsummer Cellars Clark-Claudon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain.  Rollie grew up at his father’s (Joe Heitz) winery and many of the characteristics that led Heitz Cellars to become one of California’s most classic and Iconic producers clearly made it’s way into this bottle.  This is certainly a wine that our tasting panel will never forget.  After our first taste we loved it, and thought it showed immense potential to continue to evolve inside the bottle… A week later, we decided to test our theory, pulling the cork on the previously opened bottle and pouring another taste.  It was ridiculously great and never in my career have I had a wine get better after being open for a week and not taste oxidized.  Granted only about a glass had been taken out of the bottle and we keep our warehouse really cool, we were all amazed.

Nestled at around 1000 feet in elevation on Howell Mountain, the Clark-Claudon Vineyard produces fruit of exceptional concentration, depth and intensity.  Spending 22 months in French oak barrels, this intensely powerful Mountain Grown Cabernet is drinking beautifully now, and promises another 15-20 years of pure enjoyment.

2012 HEITZ “MARTHA’S VINEYARD” CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Wine is energy in a bottle, and one of Napa Valley’s most energetic and historic terroirs is Martha’s Vineyard.  It’s one of California’s longest running single-vineyards, dating back to 1966.  With Grand Cru level quality and majestic first-growth depth, the 2012 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard is loaded with extravagant blackberries, cassis, eucalyptus, tobacco leaf, and a touch of mint, which this hallowed ground is known for.  With three separate 96 point reviews under it’s belt, I strongly recommend securing a case of this classic, American Icon, while you still can.

Positioned on the Southwest side of Oakville, walled by Harlan and Bond vineyards on it’s Western side, and Opus and ToKalon Vineyards on it’s Eastern edge, this 34 acre site is fringed with towering Eucalyptus trees, which are often credited with the distinctive minty aroma and taste of the wine.  Kept for 3 1/2 years in oak, the 2012 offers waves of concentrated dark berries laced with graphite, fresh tobacco, spices and dried mint.   I strongly recommend a case of this benchmark Napa Valley wine with all the energy to give you a lifetime of pleasure.
