2018 PRIDE MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS MERLOT

Pride Mountain Vineyards’ winemaking practices encourage the terroir signatures of their majestic high-elevation Spring Mountain Estate to be identifiable in your glass. As a result, they produce intensely flavored, effortlessly balanced wines, powerfully reflective of their origin at 2100′ elevation, and blended to be the best expression of the vintage. Their 2018 Merlot is, as Vinous writes, “gorgeous right out of the gate,” and it’s easy to see why it’s a benchmark for California Merlot.

The Estate Vineyards are at the top of Spring Mountain, and they straddle the Napa and Sonoma County line. The extreme elevation provides warm mornings and chilly afternoons that result in longer hang-time, contributing textural and flavor characteristics that don’t exist anywhere else in the world.

Winemaker Sally Johnson employs traditional winemaking practices designed to let the terroir of the grapes take center stage. She completed the 2018 vintage with 12% Cabernet Sauvignon for increased structure and intensity and 5% Cabernet Franc for aromatic lift and complexity.

2015 SCHOOL HOUSE MESCOLANZA ZINFANDEL BLEND, SPRING MOUNTAIN

If you’ve enjoyed California Zinfandel Blends, you’ve likely heard the term Mixed Blacks which is essentially a field blend that was common in California in the late 1800’s.  Mixed Blacks is what inspired the popular The Prisoner wine, which by contrast is not a field blend, but a collection of unique grapes.  It was also common in the Southern Rhone Valley as well as parts of Portugal with both Port wines and Dry Reds.  School House is a tiny producer on Spring Mountain and their Mescolanaza Zinfandel Blend comes from a single block of their Estate Vineyard. The vineyard block is planted primarily to Zinfandel along with Petite Sirah and Carignane vines.  The winery subscribes to the philosophy that 90% of the wine is made in the vineyard, and one sip of their 2015 Mescolanaza will show you why.

The School House Estate was originally planted in the 1890’s with their first vintage in 1957, and the winery has produced  every year since.  The current releases were made at Pride Mountain winery just up the road.  The 2015 shows off intense savory notes, earthy spices and focused fruit, and at under fifty per bottle this wine will simply make you grin.  With 185 cases produced, don’t to hesitate to secure yours…

2015 IMMORTAL SLOPE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Immortal Estate’s vines cling to a dramatic 55-degree slope on Spring Mountain; One of the steepest hillside vineyards in California. Initially named Hidden Ridge, the 100-point Estate now owned by Tusk Proprietor Tim Martin, Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander, and Supermodel Kate Upton, who joined the cast in 2019, produces a world-class Cabernet expression. Tim Milos makes the wines; former winemaker at Opus One, Stag’s Leap, and Cliff Lede.

Vines grown on steep slopes can experience better airflow, water drainage, and more sunlight, combining to produce fully-developed and complexly flavored grapes. Immortal Estate is a perfect example and has more than 20 separate blocks with an elevation range of 1200-1700 feet, near Pride Mountain Vineyards.

Tim selected harvest dates for each block based on taste, and the team meticulously sorted the grapes at the winery. They fermented the juice on the grape skins for up to 50 days, extracting depth, structure, and deep color. They then aged the wine for 28 months in French oak, and now with several years in the bottle, it’s rocking.
