2018 LAIRD RED HEN CHARDONNAY

With over 50 years of vineyard expertise farming some of Napa Valley’s most prime locations, the Laird family’s intimate knowledge of their vineyards is the foundation of their wines. Considered their “home vineyard,” Red Hen Ranch, located in the Oak Knoll District, is on the same property as the winery, allowing their team the ability to monitor it year-round closely.

A stand-out in the Laird Family’s portfolio of vineyards, Red Hen Ranch vineyard is influenced by cool sea breezes from the San Pablo Bay, consistently producing a Chardonnay with pronounced fruit flavors and a refreshing balance of acidity. The winery’s philosophy centers on creating wines with unmasked identity, and winemaker Brian Mox beautifully translated the 2018 vintage into its distinctive vineyard voice with delectable opulence.

2016 LAIRD SUSCOL RANCH SYRAH

Compounding 50 years of experience, the Laird family’s genuine passion for farming is evident with each new vintage. They’ve come to know the best plots for each varietal they grow, and Suscol Ranch is prime for Syrah because it receives cooling breezes from the San Pablo Bay, creating the ideal conditions for an undeniably polished style.

The most elegant illustrations of Syrah are grown in cooler climates, allowing the grapes an elongated ripening period, providing more time for acid development, resulting in fresher, more feminine style wines with delicately perfumed aromatics and subtle spice characteristics. Laird’s 2016 Suscal Ranch Syrah is a classic example of cool climate domestic Syrah, delivering outstanding quality and value.

2016 LAIRD NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Laird models strength, consistency, and value, and when it comes to traditionally styled Napa Valley Cabernet, theirs is one of the best. They’re one of Napa Valley’s preeminent farming families, which is advantageous to their fruit selection, providing the right components for former Lewis Cellars winemaker Brian Mox to craft brilliant wines, representing the essence of Napa Valley. The 2016 vintage is, as Vinous writes, “dark, powerful and enveloping,” and at under $50, it competes with Napa’s Best.

Merging three vineyards, Mast Ranch, Flat Rock, and Dry Creek, Mox softened Mast Ranch fruit’s robust structure with Flat Rock’s silky tannins and Dry Creek’s vibrancy resulting in a complete and powerful wine that’s elegant and naturally balanced.

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon spent 21 months developing in barrels and rises from one of Napa’s benchmark vintages, one of the Wine Spectator rates 98 points, referencing “intense fruit against the backdrop of their varying terroirs.” At less than $50, don’t miss this touchstone Napa Cab.

2015 LAIRD “NAPA VALLEY” CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Laird models strength, consistency, and value, and when it comes to traditionally styled Napa Valley Cabernet, theirs is one of the best.  As one of the largest vineyard owners in Napa Valley, Laird has access to some terrific fruit sources.  The 2015 Napa Cab is built from almost equal parts Mast Ranch and Flat Rock vineyards.  The winery produces single vineyard Cabernets from both of these sites which retail for $80 to $90 per bottle…  It’s a brand that I love, and in fact we featured an earlier vintage as one of our top 5 wines of the year in 2017.

2019 LAIRD “NAPA VALLEY” SAUVIGNON BLANC

There are many different styles of Sauvignon Blanc, from brightly focused, to silky and rich, with everything in between. Laird’s 2019 falls into the brightly focused category, but what puts this wine over the top in terms of quality/value was the remarkably concentrated fruit. Laird has their choice of premium vineyards, as one of Napa Valley’s preeminent farming families, and for this wine, they undoubtedly chose the right stuff.

Laird’s 2019 Sauvignon Blanc emanates from the winery’s Big Ranch Estate Vineyard, which is also home to Mario Andretti’s winery. Here, the gravel and silty clay loam soils, combined with the San Pablo Bay cooling influences, are ideal for ripening Sauvignon Blanc.

Winemaker Brian Mox fermented 15% of the grapes sur lie, and in neutral oak barrels. The balance was fermented in stainless steel tank, preserving the brightly focused fruit, and the combination of the two methods creates a beautiful tension on the palate that’s simply irresistible.
