2005 MASTERY “PROPRIETARY RED”

A love affair for Master Sommelier Kevin Vogt, this Masterful Napa Valley Blend was skillfully guided from grape to bottle by Philippe Melka, whose vast experience includes winemaker at Vineyard 29, Brand, Dana, and formerly Bryant Family, Quintessa, Hundred Acre, Dominus, to name a few highlights.  This is a rare chance to try Vogt’s maiden vintage, a wine sommeliers around the country are clamoring for…  This ’05 is really singing right now with a bouquet so riveting it’s nearly indescribable, and depth so captivating it’s a palate performance that you won’t forget.

The wine originates from one of Napa Valley’s most prized, and unique vineyards.  Gemstone Estate is divided in to small micro-blocks of distinguished clones allowing one of the most talented winemakers in the world to compose a truly distinctive and compelling blend. Philippe Melka fermented each individual lot at Vineyard 29’s state-of-the-art winemaking facility and aged them for 22 months in French oak barrels (85% new) from producers which include Taransaud, Ermitage and Baron. With nearly 9 years in the bottle, the results are simply stunning and it’s absolutely ready to drink now, yet will age gracefully for years to come in your cellar…

2018 WESTWOOD LEGEND PROPRIETARY RED

Legends of biodynamic viticulture, Westwood spares no expense raising the highest quality wines possible from their Estate. Their vineyard is one of a handful of Demeter-certified Biodynamic vineyards in North America. Westwood’s winemaker is Philippe Melka, named by the Wine Advocate as “one of the Top 10 Winemakers in the World,” and whose vast experience includes winemaking at Bryant Family, Quintessa, Hundred Acre, Mastery, and Dominus. Jeb Dunnuck writes, this wine has a “notable sense of class and balance,” and simply put, you don’t want to miss it.

Westwood Legend arose from the cool, wind-swept Annadel Gap Vineyard, located between Mt. Hood and Sonoma Mountain, and includes specially sourced organic grapes from Sonoma and Napa Valleys. Formatted to bring out the best qualities of the Estate, the 2018 blend is exquisite.

Meticulously made, Philippe and his winemaking team harvest each clone at the pinnacle of ripeness before being carefully sorted by hand and fermented in individual lots. The wine was gravity-fed into French oak barrels, where it spent the next 20 months. The result is stunning.

2016 ZUIDEMA MCGAH VINEYARD RUTHERFORD GRENACHE

Freed from a one-acre block of gnarly head-trained Grenache vines that were nearly re-planted to Cabernet, Zuidema Grenache was 30 years in the making and is a passion project by one of Napa’s most respected winemakers. Rudy Zuidema is the winemaker for Mastery and has held winemaking positions at Robert Craig, Honig, and Ehlers Estate, to name a few. His pensive winemaking style results in balanced, complex wines, deep with individuality and varietal truth. At $38, the value is unmistakable.

Sourced from the McGah Vineyard in Eastern Rutherford, Zuidema Grenache powerfully reflects the area’s nutrient-rich, rocky soils and ideal microclimate. The Gobelet trained vines yield various ripeness levels, and that lack of perfect consistency is what Rudy looks for to create the naturally rustic complexity in his wine.

Analytically hand-harvesting, de-stemming, native yeast fermenting, and three times daily punch overs for 10-12 days, Rudy’s cumulative knowledge over the past 30 years is commanding in this wine. If you’re looking for something a little different from one of Napa Valley’s greatest terroirs, this is it.

2017 RAPP RANCH NAPA VALLEY CHARDONNAY

Some of the most memorable Chardonnays offer a brilliant play between tension and elegance. Rapp Ranch’s 2017 Napa Chardonnay is a stunning example and arose from two different sites that work beautifully together, and harmoniously accentuate the best qualities from one another. This liquid gold was also made by Rudy Zuidema, whom you might recognize as the winemaker for Mastery.

The 2017 vintage intertwines fruit from the Truchard Vineyard, which lies just up the hill from Lee Hudson’s Vineyard, as well as the Poseidon Vineyard, which sits directly on the Napa Valley Marina. The Truchard block sits between Far Niente and Nickel and Nickle’s rows and contributes the incredibly opulent and expressive fruit.

The Poseidon Vineyard is planted in clay soils and contributes an electric acidity that lifts the richer fruit from Truchard. It’s the power and muscle behind the pure and delicious Truchard fruit. This beauty is simply one of my favorite Napa Chardonnays that I’ve tasted this year. With 232 cases made, don’t wait to stake your claim.

2018 RECOLTANT NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

It feels great to be on the leading edge of a new brand that’s destined to make an impact in the competitive $40 Napa Cabernet category. Recoltant is the younger brother to Le Pich and Purlieu, and the wine is produced by Julien Fayard, who is absolutely at the top of his game.

Recoltant is a collaboration of declassified barrels of premium Cabernet that didn’t quite fit into Le Pich or Purlieu.  The final blend was stitched together from several celebrated regions throughout Napa Valley, and Julian made the wine with the same standards of excellence that he practices in all of his projects.

Julien Fayard learned his craft at Chateau Lafite Rothschild, before gaining even more valuable experience as Director of Winemaking for Philippe Melka at elite Napa Valley producers like Lail, Gemstone, Hundred Acre, and Mastery. The result is so great at under forty bucks that you really have to try it.

2016 RAPP RANCH NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

You might recognize Rudy Zuidema as the winemaker for Mastery, but you might not be as familiar with Rapp Ranch & Shadybrook Estate, where Rudy is making absolutely stunning wines from the iconic Coombsville region.  Rudy has a  natural approach to winemaking, with an emphasis on small-lot techniques, and he crafts balanced wines that perfectly embody sense of place, elegance, purity, and power.

This 2016 Cabernet arose from a site located on volcanic soils on the Eastern outskirts of the town of Napa, in the highly acclaimed Coombsville region.  On the palate the wine is classic Coombsville with detailed cocoa dusted black cherry, perfectly ripe blackberries and graphite.

Emerging from the blockbuster 2016 vintage which ranks as the highest rated vintage since 1997 according to the Wine Spectator Vintage Report, this 2016 is finely detailed and effortlessly balanced.

2016 PURLIEU NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

At under $100/btl, Purlieu’s Napa Cabernet is remarkably stunning, and when you consider the list of fruit sources that they produce single-vineyard wines from, which includes; Beckstoffer To-Kalon, Georges III, Missouri Hopper and Sugarloaf, it’s an easy decision to try their Napa Cab which is a cuvée of multiple sites.  With a 95 Point score from Robert Parker, we don’t expect this remarkable wine to be available for long.

This phenomenal wine is made by Julien Fayard, who learned his craft at Chateau Lafite Rothschild, and then gained even more valuable experience as Director of Winemaking for Philippe Melka at elite Napa Valley producers like Lail, Gemstone, Hundred Acre, Vineyard 29, and Mastery…  He’s undoubtably one of the most talented up-and-coming winemakers in the Valley.

Drawing from several celebrated regions, and some of the best vineyards throughout Napa Valley, each individual site and unique micro-climate elevates the final complex blend.   With Purlieu’s rapidly expanding following, solid reputation for excellence along with the very strong reviews, I highly recommend adding some to your cellar.

2016 LE PICH “NAPA VALLEY” CABERNET SAUVIGNON

It feels great to be on the leading edge of a fledgling brand that’s soared into something as special as Le Pich and Purlieu.  We first introduced their inaugural 2009 vintage back in 2012, and never stopped singing their praises. Even with the number of times that I’ve tasted Le Pich over the years, I’m still enthralled each time I try it, but never more than our recent tasting of the 2016.  It’s unequivocally the best Cabernet from Le Pich and it’s already earned 94 Points from Robert Parker.  As the second label for Purlieu, a rising cult producer whose Cabernets range $95-$200/btl, Le Pich always delivers an amazingly high level of quality, without the lofty price tag that often comes with it.

Earning its biggest score yet in the 2016 vintage, I wouldn’t wait to secure yours.  This phenomenal Napa Cab is made by Julien Fayard, who learned his craft at Chateau Lafite Rothschild.  Julien then gained valuable experience as Director of Winemaking for Philippe Melka at elite Napa Valley producers like Lail, Gemstone, Hundred Acre, Vineyard 29, and Mastery… Taking everything to the next level in terms of quality, the 2016 Le Pich is gorgeously concentrated, dramatic and wonderfully expressive.  Drawing from several celebrated regions throughout Napa Valley, each vineyard and unique micro-climate elevates the final complex blend.  The net result is that Le Pich is one of our best selling brands of all times, for good reason.  I strongly recommend a case…
