Summers crafts their Reserve Cabernet in a deeply enchanting style, which they achieve through extended oak aging and meticulous fruit selection. Their Estate Vineyard in Calistoga sits adjacent to Tamber Bey and is near Chateau Montelena. The soils are loaded with volcanic compounds, formed by ancient lava flows, and produce Cabernet Sauvignon with powerful fruit and intriguing minerality. At its $70 retail price, it’s stunning, but at $49, you may want to grab all you can.
The 2016 20th Anniversary Reserve Cabernet balances fruit from the winery’s Villa Andriana Vineyard in Calistoga, with Mountain grapes from select higher-elevation sites in Calistoga. Winemaker Ignacio Blancas is well-versed in Calistoga terroir and spent 15 vintages at Summers Estate, and has consulted for several other wineries in Calistoga.
Calistoga is warmer than most other appellations in Napa and thus, produces some of the biggest, boldest, and most robust Cabernet Sauvignons in the Valley. Summer’s Reserve Cab in 2016 was created with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and is super deep, rich, and layered. At this price, don’t miss it.
