2016 VINEYARD 29 CRU CABERNET SAUVIGNON
When talking about world-class wines, the vineyard location and the winemaker often lead the conversation. One immediate way to take both to the next level is by using cutting edge technology too. The right technology gives the winemaker every tool necessary to create the absolute best wine possible. From my perspective, Vineyard 29 is THE most innovative and state-of-the-art winemaking facility in Napa Valley, with everything from gravity flow tanks… to an optical sorter that can be programed algorithmically… to a control room that monitors the conditions inside the vineyards, caves and winery. Sounds expensive right? CRU Cabernet utilizes ALL of the above and at $60/btl, it’s one of the best values in premium Napa Valley Cabernet.
The 2016 Cru Cabernet was thoughtfully constructed from fourteen vineyards, with the core being the vineyards surrounding the winery’s Estate in Saint Helena. It was guided from grape to bottle by talented winemaker Keith Emerson who’s made the wine since the inaugural vintage in 2005. He also worked alongside legendary winemaker Philippe Melka on the winery’s high-scoring Estate wines through 2017, while Phillippe was consulting winemaker. The 2016 is incredibly deep and hedonistic, with a remarkable velvety, satin feel and layers of complexity. At $60, this wine is a steal in terms of the quality of what’s inside the bottle…
