2017 HEIR APPARENT ATLAS PEAK CABERNET SAUVIGNON
The ancient volcanic soils, combined with elevation-influenced climatic conditions and Southwest facing slopes, make Atlas Peak a prime-zone for premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Luminaries William Hill, Piero Antinori, Michael Mondavi, and Dr. Jan Krupp of Stagecoach Vineyard recognized the area’s vast potential. Heir Apparent’s version comes from a parcel adjacent to Stagecoach Vineyard, and the wine exhibits all of the best hallmarks of the district with stunning concentration and remarkable definition.
Volcanic, minerally, and concentrated are all fitting descriptors of classic Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon, and it’s this area’s iron-rich, rock-laden soils full of volcanic compounds that contribute to many of these hallmark traits. It’s also one of Napa Valley’s mountain appellations’ coolest, allowing the grapes more time to develop compelling flavors.
Heir Apparent’s winemaking team utilized around 10% Merlot in the 2017 vintage, which contributes to supple fruits and a satiny texture that plays well with the concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. After around 24 months in barrel and more than a year in the bottle, this 2017 is dazzling right now.
