2016 FLOWERS SONOMA COAST CHARDONNAY
There’s a reason why many of California’s most iconic Chardonnay producers including Peter Michael, Marcassin, Martinelli, Fort Ross and Pahlmeyer all source fruit from the Fort Ross Seaview AVA. The close proximity to the Pacific Ocean results in a long, cool growing season, which allows the grapes to reach their optimum potential. The dramatic landscape and steep hillsides result in diverse soils, which adds to the remarkable complexity in the fruit. One of the best examples is the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay which has stunning balance, intriguing complexity and lovely acidity. With scores above 90 points from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate and Vinous, I wouldn’t wait to harvest some for your cellar.
With attention to every detail, Flowers hand-sorts their fruit on their custom-built shaker table before gently dispersing the berries onto the next sorting table where six sorters assess every cluster before allowing only the best fruit to pass through into the fermenters. Gently transferred by gravity into small stainless steel tanks for fermentation, then French oak barrels for 12 months, the 2016 is really blossoming right now and should continue to bear gorgeous fruit for the next 2-3 years…
