2017 DOMAINE DE CHANTEMERLE 1ER CRU FOURCHAUME CHABLIS
The Chablis region is revered for being one of the most transpicuous of any wine where only Chardonnay is allowed to be grown and labeled as Chablis. These wines often show remarkable tension, clarity and distinction. A great Chablis will articulate terroir (an expression of the earth it was grown in) at a remarkably high level due to the area’s cool climate and clay-limestone soils. One of my favorite examples is Domaine de Chantemerle’s Premier Cru Fourchaume Chablis. The 2017 has laser focus, a keen thread of acidity and detailed tropical melon, nectarine, green apple and orange zest. The previous vintage was a staple in our Yountville tasting room, where it generated more enthusiastic “Wows!” per taste than we’d thought possible at this wonderfully realistic price point…
The nearly 4 decade old Chardonnay vines produce fruit that’s marvelously linear, which perfectly complements Winemaker Francis Boudin’s style of aging in 100% stainless steel. This method results in a weightless palate that’s purely stunning… The wine displays a mouthwatering set of flavors, spanning juicy white peach, pineapple, and pear, mingled with citrus oils and exotic spices. With a limited number of cases imported into the US, and the buzz surrounding the 2017 vintage in Burgundy, I strongly recommend stocking up on this remarkable Premier Cru Chablis.
