2017 DOMAINE GUY ROBIN CHABLIS VIEILLES VIGNES
Merriam Webster defines Terroir as, “the combination of factors including soil, climate, and sunlight that gives wine grapes their distinctive character,” and Guy Robin’s Vieilles Vignes (Old Vine) Chablis offers a sharply defined, liquid definition of terroir in France’s region of Chablis. Older vines can often provide the best representation of their unique terroir because the root systems are deeper, allowing more complexity to flow from the earth. Guy Robin began collecting parcel by parcel, old Chablis vineyards back in the 1960’s, and to this day there are few other Chablis estates with such a rich collection of older vines, and as a result, few other estates that deliver Chablis wines of such character and complexity. On the palate their 2017 has laser focus and remarkable clarity that’s hard to find at this price level.
Domaine Guy Robin’s 2017 Vieilles Vignes hails exclusively from older vines averaging around 4 decades in age. In 2017 Chablis suffered from frost, which resulted in lower grape yields, however those that survived were of extraordinary quality. The quality is unmistakable in this Chablis… The wine is texturally intriguing with a keen thread of acidity, and remarkably vivid flavors of white peach, shaved lemon, orange blossoms and lime peel. At $33/btl, don’t let this one slip by.
