How many Chardonnays have you tasted that gave you goosebumps? TOR’s 2018 Carneros Chardonnay did that for me, and when I learned about the origins of the grapes, it made perfect sense. The 2018 is a barrel selection from Steve Beresini’s heritage vines, Larry Hyde’s world-renowned Carneros fruit, and the iconic Durell Vineyard in Sonoma.  Any one of these three sites could be considered one of California’s Grand Cru Vineyards, and when paired with the immeasurable talent of winemaker Jeff Ames, the sum of all three sites is even greater than the original.  Jeff was the former assistant winemaker who worked alongside Thomas Rivers Brown at Schrader, Maybach, Outpost, as well as Tor before he took over as head winemaker. For this 2018 Chardonnay he captured the best qualities from each vineyard, and harmonized them into something remarkable.

All three sites were hand-harvested separately, and at their individual optimum ripeness before being pressed directly into small French oak barrels.  The wine then went through Malolactic Fermentation, which is the process where tart malic acid  is converted to softer, creamier lactic acid, which adds elements of nuanced complexity and textural depth to the wine.  If you enjoy some of California’s greatest Chardonnays, but don’t love the often high-prices that come along with them, TOR’s new 2018 Carneros Chardonnay is for you.

Winery Notes: “This wine is from three historic Chardonnay vineyards, the sum of this winemaker’s selection is greater than its parts. Steve Beresini’s thirty-year-old, dry-farmed heritage vines gives depth and texture, Hyde Vineyard’s wind-cooled topography gives minerality and precision, Durell vineyard contributes richness and opulence. 470 cases made.” 94 Points ~ International Wine Report
