2009 GOMEZ CRUZADO RIOJA, RESERVA
Sometimes it all comes down to trust… ¬†With wine, trust plays a large role when discovering a new wine that can completely change your perspective on a unknown region, and open up new realms of curiosity and avenues of enjoyment.¬† I always do my best to list alternate reviews or pertinent details that will help you make your decision on trying a new wine.¬† There is so little info out there on this one, you simply have to trust me… ¬†That said, I picked this wine within the top few in our tasting of over 75 wines that included some very prestigious, highly rated bottles topping $200/btl.¬† Judged on all merits, at $29.99/btl this wine took center stage.
You probably haven’t heard anything about Gomez Cruzado yet, but the winery was founded in 1886 and recently purchased in 2004. ¬†The new leadership is taking quality to the next level, producing wines in a more modern style.¬† Positioned just 300 meters from Spanish Icons Muga and Cune, (Wine Spectator #1 Wine in 2013,) the 2009 Gomez Cruzado has a remarkable presence on the palate, wrapping your taste buds in a velvet-lined core of sweet tobacco, ripe plum, smoked violets, and black cherries.¬† This wine is memorable, distinct and overwhelmingly delicious….¬† As great as it is, it will not be around long at $29.99/btl.
