2010 GOMEZ CRUZADO RIOJA, RESERVA
The top selection from a recent tasting which included over 75 wines, along with some very prestigious, highly rated bottles topping $200/btl… When we offered Gomez Cruzado’s ’09 Rioja Reserva, we asked you to trust us because there was not much info on it… Many of you did, and the entire vintage was gone in a single day. And without skipping a beat, the re-order requests came roaring in… We called and had a sample of the 2010 air-shipped to our warehouse, and once again, this exemplary Rioja judged on all merits alone, took center stage at our tasting. Sometimes you just need to forget the label, forget the origin, forget the varietals and simply focus on what’s in the bottle, which in this case is simply wonderful.
Founded in 1886 and recently purchased in 2004, the new leadership at Gomez Cruzado is taking quality to the next level, producing wines in a more modern style. Positioned just 300 meters from Spanish Icons Muga and Cune, (Wine Spectator #1 Wine in 2013,) and like the ’09, the 2010 Gomez Cruzado has a remarkable presence on the palate, and swaddles your taste buds in a satin-lined core of pressed cherries, sweet tobacco, ripe plum, smokey violets, and rose petals. This wine is memorable, distinct and overwhelmingly delicious, and just like the ’09, it will not be around long at $29.99/btl.
