2011 PIANCORNELLO BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
Delightful on every level, Picancornello’s 2011 Brunello di Montalcino moves across the palate with elegance and sophistication, unfurling memories of Morello cherries, plum cake, white truffles and rosemary. Finely-tuned aromas of back cherry, leather, plum and spices, build definition and pick up new elements with aeration. Antonio Galloni alerts readers that Piancornello is “One of my favorite under the radar estates in Montalcino,” and with no shortage of confidence, the 2011 Piancornello is a textbook example of classic Brunello, and has already earned strong reviews from Vinous and James Suckling.
The Pieri family purchased the Estate at Piancornello in 1950 and sold fruit to neighboring wineries for four decades before producing their first vintage in 1991. The name Pian refers to the vineyards location on the hamlet of rocky, volcanic soils, which are perfect for growing world class Sangiovese. A wonderful interpretation of this magnificent varietal, the 2011 has explosive intensity, and absolutely remarkable elegance. I strongly recommend securing a case of this quintessential wine. There’s not much of this imported into the US, and when it’s gone, it’s gone for good.
