2012 BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS TAHON de TOBELOS RIOJA RESERVA
There are many types of wines that are meant to be consumed young, but wines made from Tempranillo are not generally considered to be included in that category. Tempranillo has the power of a mountain Cabernet, and the incredible structure of an old-vine Carignan. Because of this, Rioja Reservas are required to be aged for a total of three years, including a minimum of 12 months in oak, before release. At 8 years from the vintage, the Tahon Reserva Rioja 2012 is perfectly poised to impress right now, and it’s unbelievable wine at this price level.
Tahon Rioja Reserva is 100% Tempranillo, and was cut from ancient 60 year-old, low-yielding vines grown on a steep hillside vineyard overlooking Conchas de Haro. Exceeding the aging requirements for Rioja Reserva with around 14 months in oak barrels, the 2012 is deeply powerful with scrumptious layers of ripe blackberries, dark cherry, charcuterie, spices and hints of cacao.
2012 was a drought influenced vintage in Rioja, which resulted in low yields of powerfully concentrated berries. According to the Wine Spectator, there were only 400 cases produced of the 2012 Reserva, and just 100 imported into the US… All of this is beautifully paired with a 93 point score, so don’t wait too long to secure yours.
