2012 NOSTER TEMPLARI PRIORAT
The two most iconic regions in Spain are Priorat and Rioja and in fact they’re the only two regions in Spain to have wines that qualify as DOCa, the highest qualification level set by Spanish wine regulations. Priorat is located South of Barcelona and is known for producing bold, sophisticated reds that often show copious mineral notes and subtle spice characteristics. The area is one of the driest regions in Spain with an average rainfall of just 15 to 23 inches per year, and without irrigation, the vines are forced deep into the earth to find water, which is why the wines have so much ancient mineral notes. The 2012 Noster Temparli perfectly showcases the remarkable power and compelling qualities in Priorat that I look for in my glass and at under thirty per bottle, I strongly recommend a case.
Founded in the 15th Century, Perla del Priorat winery which produces Noster is one of the oldest wineries in Priorat, and you can actually sense and taste the antiquity when you try it. The dominant grape in the region is Garnacha, which thrives in the warm climate and limestone rich soils. The 2012 Templari blends 60% Garnacha with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Syrah aged in French oak barrels. This beauty deserves a spot in your cellar.
