2014 BODEGAS RIOJANAS MONTE REAL RIOJA RESERVA
Have you ever looked at the packaging on a value Red from Spain and thought, how could the winery afford to put wine in the bottle with packaging that nice? Without question some of the greatest values in full-bodied Red wines are coming from Spain’s Rioja region. With the lower cost of land and labor, and long standing traditions of holding wine longer in barrel and bottle before release, wineries are able to produce some spectacular reds that are rich in character, and offer them at ridiculously low prices. I was stunned by how how great the Bodegas Riojanas 2014 Reserva Rioja was at our recent tasting. Keeping in mind the 24-30 months in barrel and a full year in the bottle before it’s released, this generous, full-bodied red has had enough time to blossom into something truly special.
Classically traditional with a touch of modern technology, the winery dates back to 1890, and in recent years they’ve added more state-of-the-art sorting tables and hoppers which allow them to select grape by grape the different qualities that they’re looking for. The blend is 100% Tempranillo which is Spain’s most iconic grape, and revered for producing full-bodied red wines. If you love big, full-bodied red wines that offer unimaginable bang-for-your-buck, this one’s definitely for you.
