2015 MURIEL RIOJA RESERVA
Finding a Reserve wine at under $20 is not an impossibility, but you have to look in the right places. Rioja is the most iconic wine region in Spain, and Reserva is the benchmark classification within Rioja, and requires a minimum of 3 years aging, with at least one year in oak barrels, and at least six months in the bottle. Bodegas Muriel ages their Reserva for a full two years in oak, and the wine is penetrating, intense, and generous. With dual 93 point scores from top critics, I wouldn’t wait too long to secure yours.
Bodegas Muriel’s incredible Rioja Reserva arose from vines grown in the heart of Rioja Alta and the Rioja Alavesa. What makes this wine truly special is the poor and balanced calcareous soil with a clay loam texture, which is exceptionally suitable for Tempranillo.
Muriel doubled up on the required 12 months barrel aging, with 24 months in barrel and a year in bottle before release, so this wine showcases stunning depth, penetrating fruit, rich textures, and wood spice.
