2016 TENUTA ARGENTIERA POGGIO AI GINEPRI BOLGHERI ROSSO
Bolgheri is synonymous with the superior-quality Super Tuscan wines, enveloped by a dense concentration of 100 point producers, including Italian legends Ornellaia, Sassicaia, and Tignanello. Most Super Tuscans from Bolgheri start around $40, so we were surprised by Tenuta Argentiera’s Poggio Ai Ginepri at $25. The wine shares many of the region’s classic hallmarks, presenting them with impressive balance and tangible value.
Tenuta Argentiera is the closest winery to the Tyrrhenian coast, and their vineyards are grown at the highest altitude in the entire Bolgheri territory. This wine also makes its entrance from another stellar year in Tuscany, which the Wine Spectator gave an overall vintage rating of 96 points.
The 2016 Poggio Ai Ginepri weaves together 40% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The varietals are fermented and aged separately and artfully blended in a fresh and easy-drinking style, with just enough concentration and complexity to highlight some of Bolgheri’s most classic attributes.
