2017 BODEGA ATAMISQUE CATALPA MALBEC
Malbec is King in Argentina, and of all of the best areas in the Country to grow it, the sub-region of Tupungato, located in the Northernmost area of the Uco Valley is considered the epicenter for quality. The region lies at the base of the Mt. Tupungato volcano, which rises nearly 22 thousand feet in elevation, and Catalpa’s vineyard rests at a staggering 4,430 feet. There’s a correlation between Malbec grown at higher altitudes and an increased elegance in the wine, and wineries like Zuccardi and Catena have invested heavily in the region. Bodega Atamisque’s 2017 Catalpa Old Vines Malbec is an stunning value at at $20, and with the 92 Point score from James Suckling, I wouldn’t wait to secure yours.
Arising from ancient 78 year old vines grown in volcanic soils, this 100% Malbec was hewn from one of Argentina’s best vintages in the last decade. The Wine Spectator’s Vintage report noted, “A return to characteristically dry weather delivers intensely flavored grapes, but yields are low… refined, terroir-driven Malbec-based wines, especially in prime districts in the Uco Valley.” This 2017 is deeply concentrated oozes muddled blackberries, liquid violets, black coffee and crushed rock. If you enjoy bold, full-bodied Reds with plenty of personality, this one is for you…
