2017 QUINTA DO VALLADO DOURO RESERVA
Quinta do Vallado is one of the oldest estates in the Douro Valley of Portugal and was built in 1716 by Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira. More than three centuries later, Dona’s great-great-great grandsons still run the Estate. Their 2017 Reserva fuses more than 30 grape varieties from 100-year-old vines. The wine has striking old-world complexity, is highly-textured, and persistent. It already has 95 points from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, and with very few cases imported into the US, don’t wait too long to order some.
Vallado’s winemaker Francisco “Xito” Olazabal, is one of Portugal’s most respected winemakers, and he’s also the winemaker at Quinta do Vale Meao, which like Quinta do Vallado, earns high 90s scores and has scaled the Wine Spectator Top 100 on multiple occasions.
At the winery, Quinta do Vallado combines state-of-the-art technology with traditional methods. Some of the grapes are still foot-trodden in traditional granite “Lagares,” while the rest are fermented in 5-ton stainless steel vats. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and spends 18 months developing in French oak barrels, and the final result is stunning to taste.
