Of the 96 villages in Beaujolais, only 10 are designated as Cru (the best) and Moulin-a-Vent is considered the King of the Crus and is revered for producing wines with structure, depth and ageability. Beaujolias is Burgundy’s value region to the South, and it’s becoming increasingly known for more than just fruity, easy drinking wines. The main grape in Beaujolais is Gamay Noir, which is a cross between Pinot Noir and the ancient white variety of Gouais. The Grape is thin skinned with low tannins, which lends to their ability to pair well with a variety of foods. One of my favorite examples of Cru Beaujolais is Domaine Des Rosiers Moulin-a-Vent which comes stacked with detailed dark cherry, deep blueberry, German Chocolate, holiday spice and red flowers. At under $30, this is the perfect opportunity to experience Burgundy’s “other” red grape.
All of Beaujolais Cru Vineyards are nestled in the Northern part of the appellation, just South of Burgundy’s renowned Macon region. Made with 100% Gamay grape, this stunning red is rich and plump on the palate and saturates your taste buds in concentrated red and black fruits, interesting spices, and detailed wild rose.
