2018 DOMAINE BARAT PREMIER CRU CHABLIS VAILLONS
Chablis is the most pure expression of the Chardonnay grape, which is a direct result of the cool climate in the region, limestone-based soils, and longstanding traditions of using little to no new oak. A classically styled Chablis is clean and linear with bright citrus fruits, minerals, refreshing acidity, and little to no buttery or oaky characteristics. One of my favorite examples is from Domaine Barat, and their 2018 Premier Cru Vaillons is ridiculously good this year.
Domaine Barat dates back to 1795 and has a reputation for producing some of the most compelling, absolutely brilliant Chablis. Fortunately, for us, they do so at a wonderfully realistic price.
The 2018 Vaillons was carved from half-century old Chardonnay vines, grown in soils rich in clay and limestone, and the wine is stunningly brilliant. 2018 was a generous vintage in Chablis in both yields and quality. If you love Chardonnay in its purest form, you’ve got to try this one.
