2015 DANCING HARES “MAD HATTER” PROPRIETARY RED
In true Mad Hatter style, the 2014 vintage of Dancing Hares “Mad Hatter” disappeared at a frenzied pace, escaping down the rabbit hole before many of you were able to secure a case. Dancing Hares released their first vintage in 2003 under the guidance of Andy Erickson, who you may recall made Screaming Eagle from 2005-2010 producing two perfect 100 Point Wines. The property was purchased in 2016 by Tuck Beckstoffer, the son of renowned grape grower Andy Beckstoffer, whose company is one of the largest independent vineyard owners in Napa. Tuck enlisted the talents of Shawn Johnson and Philippe Melka, whose vast experience includes being winemaker at Vineyard 29, Brand, Dana, Bryant Family, Quintessa, Hundred Acre, and Dominus…
Located at the foot of Howell Mountain, the winery produces two limited production wines, which include their Dancing Hares Red (retails for around $150/btl,) and the Mad Hatter Red at less than seventy five. The 2015 Mad Hatter is round and supple and with terrific focus reveals plenty of incense, wild raspberries, espresso roast, plum and baking spices. The 2013 vintage of this wine earned 94 points from Robert Parker, and although the 2015 is not yet rated, at under $75/btl this is definitively one of the best second wines produced in Napa Valley.
