2015 DEPARTMENT 66 COTES CATALANES GRENACHE
Department 66 is the passion project of Dave Phinney, founder of Prisoner and Orin Swift brands, and a supremely talented winemaker and visionary. Overwhelmed by the rustic beauty of ancient Grenache vines grown on steep hillsides of Cotes Catalanes, France, Dave purchased 300 acres of these old, gnarly vines. He then built a winery to produce this brilliant old vine Grenache. Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate writes it’s “Rocking Stuff” and a “big blockbuster beauty to drink over the coming decade.”
Dave and the wine team harvested the 2015 vintage from 60-year-old vines grown in black schist, with small granite and limestone deposits scattered in red, rocky soils known as angile. The region is deep in France’s southwest corner, adjacent to the Pyrénées-Orientales mountain range, where old vine Grenache thrives.
Dave aged the 2015 D66 for 18 months in French oak barrels combining a core of old vine Grenache, layered in with Syrah, Carignan, and Mourvedre. The wine is broad and expansive with lush textures, dark berries, and intriguing spices. Yum.
