2016 TAKEN “NAPA VALLEY” PROPRIETARY RED
One of the best places to look for exciting New World style wines, is in brands started by the Next Generation of winemakers. Just look at Carlo Mondavi’s RAEN, Morgan Twain-Peterson’s Bedrock, or the success of Joe Wagner’s Belle Glos Pinots and you’ll find some wines well worth seeking. Josh Phelps grew up in a prominent winemaking family. His father Chris Phelps was the founding winemaker at Dominus in Yountville and he also worked at Caymus and other notable wineries. Josh co-founded TAKEN wine in 2010 with 100 cases of Cabernet and the brand was inspired to introduce a new generation to high quality wines. It was rapidly successful and in 2017 Josh sold his interest in Taken Wine Co. to Trinchero Family Estates. The 2016 made a positive impression on our panel and at under thirty bucks the wine is a serious value.
Created in a rich and showy style, the 2016 has a concentrated core that’s decked with intense black fruits, earthly spices and black chocolates. The final blend checks in at 70% Cabernet Sauvignon embellished with Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah. Held captive for around 18 months in French oak, the 2016 is really starting to show. I highly recommend taken a case while supplies last.
