2016 VANDELLA SCARROW PROPRIETARY BLEND, PASO ROBLES
When it comes to handcrafted, artisanal wines, there’s one brand that encapsulates the full meaning on an entirely new level. At Vandella each individual grape and cluster is hand picked exclusively by the winemaker, and is meticulously sorted during the picking process with only pristine clusters making it into the bin. In fermentation, each punchdown is also done by hand, where literally every aspect of the winemaking process is meticulous without compromise. The result is simply stunning to taste, with a surreal presence on the palate, you can absolutely taste the care that went into each and every bottle.
Created from Ancient vines, with some planted in the 1800’s, the winemaker creates a single, unique wine each vintage, allowing the land to determine the direction of the blend. The 2016 reminds me of young Cote Rotie, but it’s a fusion of Rhone and Portuguese varietals that unwind rather ceremoniously on the palate with vivid and intense dark fruits, autumn spices, wild game and white pepper.
