$30.00 $25.00 $25.00

The feeling that I get when I taste a wine that hits my palate just right, but then I learn the price is much lower than I would have ever guessed, is one that I’ve had with Syrah more times than with ANY other varietal.  Syrah is one of the classic varietals of the world, and it was made famous in the Northern Rhone valley of France with the world-class wines Cote Rotie and Hermitage.  The most famous producer of Cote Rotie in the world is Jaboulet, and after tasting Trinity Hill’s Syrah it was no surprise to learn that their winemaker John Hancock worked harvest at Jaboulet and the cuttings for their Gimblett Gravels Syrah came from Jaboulet’s vineyard.  As it turns out, the terroir of Gimblett Gravels in Hawkes Bay New Zealand is perfectly suited to ripen Syrah.  At $25/btl, you’ll have to do a double take at the price tag when you try this double 93 Point Syrah.

Robert Parker wrote that “Trinity Hill is one of Hawke’s Bays outstanding producers,” and they’ve been making world class wines for more than 20 years.  They were one of the first to recognize the potential of Hawkes Bay’s Gimblett Gravels wine growing district, where they planted grapes over the former bed of the Ngaruroro River.  The wine is deep and rich, and loaded with intense black fruits, cloves, Moroccan spices and dark chocolate.

Description

2015 TRINITY HILL GIMBLETT GRAVELS SYRAH HAWKES BAY, NEW ZEALAND

Black pepper and paprika notes leap out of the glass, featuring rich, ripe, black licorice-scented huckleberry and blackberry flavors. Generous and increasingly detailed on the finish, with hints of Earl Grey tea and toasted cumin coming in on a velvety frame. Drink now through 2028.”

This has a sense of class to it and a raw, fresh power that really impresses. The wine is concentrated and poised. All manner of red to blue to purple and darker shades of fruit roll through that palate. There’s a density to the very fine tannins that reflects the season and the quality of work in vineyard and winery. Best from 2020 and beyond. Screw cap.”
