2017 ROBERT BIALE ROYAL PUNISHERS PETITE SIRAH
The two grape varieties crossed to create Petite Sirah are Pelousin and Syrah, and Robert Biale’s Royal Punishers got its name from scrambling the letters of both parent grapes. This deep, inky, and powerful red, is appropriately named and deserves its reputation as one of Napa Valley’s top Petite Sirahs.
Robert Biale sources his Royal Punishers Petite Sirah from Carpy-Connolly Ranch in Rutherford. The well-drained gravel and sandy loam soils, and warm daytime temperatures are ideally suited for ripening Petite Sirah grapes.
The wine team harvested the 2017 vintage in late September, a couple of weeks before the wildfires, and the fruit first was sorted in the vineyard by hand, and again at the winery, keeping only the best berries. They performed punch-downs three times each day during maceration, extracting an incredibly deep, inky color, which is a hallmark of this wine.
