2016 APALTAGUA COLECCION SAN ANTONIO VALLEY PINOT NOIR
Pinot Noir thrives in cool climates, with sandy loam or clay soils, and is often planted in areas influenced by Oceans. Apaltagua’s Coleccion Pinot Noir comes from the winery’s Estate Vineyard in Chile’s San Antonio Valley, located just 12 kilometers from the Pacific. The average high in the summer is 73 degrees, and the moderate climate allows the grapes to mature slowly, maintain acidity, and develop deep flavors.
Apaltagua’s Vineyard in San Antonio Valley consists of gentle hills, with sandy/clay-loam soils scattered with quartz in distinct stages of decomposition. The vineyard sits at 130 meters above sea level and is heavily influenced by morning fog and maritime breezes.
At the winery, Apaltagua’s winemaking team barrel ferments the Pinot for just six months to preserve the fruit’s natural essence. Next, the blend is completed and transferred to stainless steel tanks where it matures for an additional 3-4 months before bottling. At $23, this a stunning example of value Pinot Noir from the Southern Hemisphere.
