2016 PENCE RANCH “SANTA RITA HILLS” PINOT NOIR
From an area thrust into the spotlight in 2004 with the debut of the hit movie Sideways, the Santa Rita Hills AVA is known for producing Pinot Noirs with exceptional aromatics, terrific acidity and remarkable focus. While the movie highlighted a few stars, including Sanford, Foxen and Sea Smoke, there are approximately 60 vineyards inside the Santa Rita Hills AVA, and most have been planted within the last two decades. Pence Ranch winemaker Sashi Moorman is well versed in Santa Rita Hills terroir, and one of the most accomplished winemakers in the area. Decanter Magazine called Sashi “one of California’s brightest talents,” and after spending 5 years at Ojai winery, Sashi has helped craft award winning wines for Stolpman, Evening Land, and Domaine de la Côte. While the area often garners a premium for Pinot Noir, Pence Ranch is an excellent value at $24.99/btl.
The Pence Estate Vineyard is located adjacent to John Sebastiano’s Vineyard, which some of you may recognize from single vineyard bottlings by Paul Lato, Foxen and Ojai… The Santa Rita Hills Pinot is a blend of 9 different clones and embodies elegance, character and balance, all wrapped into a truly brilliant bottle of wine. Spending just 9 months in French oak, and preserving the wines natural acidity, and lively fruit, the 2016 is really starting to show.
