2017 GOUFFIER MERCUREY LA CHARMEE
Gouffier is an incredible 200-year-old estate with 5.5 hectares of organically grown vines spread across eight appellations in the Côte Chalonnaise. Their single-vineyard La Charmée Red Burgundy comes from Mercurey, which shares similarities in climate and soils to Burgundy’s Côte d’Or. Red Burgundies from there are often deep, with intense color, full-body, rustic charm, and spiced cherry characteristics. They can offer tremendous value too, and at $36, Gouffier is stunningly good.
Named after the village around where the grapes are grown, Mercurey is an area that encompasses 30 premier Cru vineyards with soils ranging from marly calcic with Oxfordian limestone to crystalline Jurassic rocks.
The wine team vinified Gouffier’s La Charmée Vineyard 100% Pinot Noir with 30% whole-cluster, for added depth, color, and freshness. The wine has incredible dark plum and black cherry fruit, intermixed with intriguing spice and mineral characteristics. This tiny production Burgundy is genuinely a joy to behold.
