2015 CHÂTEAU DES EYRINS LA CLOSERIE DES EYRINS MARGAUX
We recently tasted a classically styled Margaux from a tiny producer whose Estate vineyard borders the iconic First Growth Château Margaux. The winery, along with seven acres of vineyard holdings was recently purchased by Julie and Xavier Gonet-Médeville who are both incredibly talented makers and both come from a long line of Champagne growers. The winery was previously owned by Eric Grangerou, whose family members were cellar masters for Château Margaux for generations, and it was the Grangerou’s who recognized the vast potential of their parcels. And while First Growth Margaux can easily top $1000/btl, La Closerie des Eyrins is an excellent value at under $40. Our panel was floored by the quality, and this wine perfectly represents everything I love about Margaux.
Forged from the highly sought after 2015 vintage, which the Wine Spectator describes as “truly special” in Margaux, La Closerie Des Eyrins combines 70% Cabernet Sauvignon with 30% Merlot. Of all the regions in Bordeaux, Margaux is most recognized for producing powerful, yet beautifully elegant wines. The best Margaux will even have you thinking about them long after the experience, which is exactly what I found with La Closerie des Eyrins. With very few cases imported, don’t wait too long to secure your case, because this one over-performs on every level.
