2013 VALDEZ “ST PETER’S CHURCH VINEYARD” ZINFANDEL
Have you ever tasted a perfectly cellared California Zinfandel and had an epiphany moment, realizing that many Zinfandels will get better with age, and that maybe you’ve been missing out by drinking them too early? A perfect example is the 2013 Valdez Zinfandel from St Peter’s Church Vineyard which was one of our top 5 wines of the year in 2018. Their unique style of crafting concentrated, well-built, detailed and intense Zinfandel bodes exceptionally well for cellaring. Now with more than 5 years of development in the bottle, the concentrated core of fruit expands with an escalating persistence, and unmasks pure, expansive flavors that are deeper, richer and more pronounced. And to make things even more interesting, because we recently sold out of their value-priced Sonoma County Zinfandel, we’ve made a deal to fill the void with their 2013 St Peters Zin which is inarguably one of the best values in the shop at this price.
Arising from a 5 acre vineyard in Alexander Valley that’s planted to nearly century old vines, this wine exhibits all the qualities that I look for in Old Vine Zinfandel. Rosenblum fans might also recognize this vineyard from single vineyard Zinfandels that they produced in the 1990’s. The Valdez family are some California’s most sought after wine growers, having farmed for Aubert, Kistler, Paul Hobbs and others, and their St Peter’s Church Zinfandel is simply one of the best Zins produced in California.
