James Suckling

Spice-driven aromas of blackcurrants, dried herbs, cedar and blackberry compote. The palate is focused and pure, with a full-bodied mouthfeel that is supported by supple tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of Damson plums, mocha, graphite and earth. Very refined and pure, with a restrained approach that will age gracefully in the bottle. Drink or hold.

Vinous

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Caldwell Vineyard is another terrific wine in this range from Erin and Massimo Di Costanzo. It offers tons of old-school savoriness and Coombsville character but with the mid-weight structure and relative approachability that is typical of the year.

Wine Advocate

Primarily from a block planted in the early 1980s, Di Costanzo's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Caldwell Vineyard was harvested on October 6, yet it finished at only 13.4% alcohol. Scents of pencil shavings, crushed stone, black cherries and floral notes mark the nose, while the medium-bodied palate is streamlined, smooth and supple, with some sneaky silky tannins on the finish.

About This Wine

The 2022 Di Costanzo Caldwell Vineyard Cabernet brings one of Napa Valley’s most storied sites into sharp focus. From the first moment, you feel the pedigree of Caldwell Vineyard, planted in 1983 from Bordeaux cuttings, grounding the wine in Old World lineage while speaking clearly in a Napa voice. That history doesn’t sit in the background. It moves through the wine, shaping its structure, its poise, and its confidence. That presence finds its shape in the hands of Massimo Di Costanzo, whose approach centers on precision and balance. His path, from Tignanello in Tuscany to Clos de los Siete in Argentina, has sharpened a perspective grounded in balance and site expression. Here, he applies that experience with a measured hand, guiding the wine into alignment so that structure, freshness, and detail move together without excess. Time in barrel refines rather than defines the wine. Over roughly twenty-two months in French oak, the elements settle into place, creating a seamless interplay between tannin, fruit, and acidity that feels composed from the first sip through the finish. Discover it for yourself.
