Aia Vecchia’s 2025 Lagone Bianco is a striking departure from what most wine drinkers expect from coastal Tuscany. Made entirely from Viognier, it comes from a single vineyard in the Comune di Orbetello, in the Maremma, where Aia Vecchia has extended its reach beyond the estate’s Bolgheri roots. The variety may be inseparable from France’s Northern Rhône, but here it takes on a distinctly Tuscan identity, shaped by a Mediterranean landscape of sandy, clay, and limestone soils and the influence of the nearby coast. Aia Vecchia gives that Viognier a cellar treatment designed to build far more dimension than a simple, fruit-driven white. Following a brief cold maceration, the wine is fermented and aged in 500-liter tonneaux, with five months in new oak. The larger barrels allow Viognier’s natural richness and aromatic character to remain central while adding texture and structure. It is an ambitious approach for a Tuscan white, and one that deliberately sets Lagone Bianco apart from Aia Vecchia’s stainless-steel-aged Vermentino. Perhaps most compelling is that Lagone Bianco represents something genuinely new for a family whose modern winemaking story began three decades ago. Aia Vecchia created the wine as the white counterpart to Lagone, translating the same pursuit of balance between fruit, structure, and oak into 100% Viognier. The result expands the idea of what this corner of Tuscany can produce: a single-vineyard white with Mediterranean origins, Rhône inspiration, and a personality entirely its own.
