Apsara Cellars founder Robin Akhurst didn’t arrive in wine through a traditional path. While attending university in Edinburgh, he discovered a fascination with wine that eventually led him to leave Scotland on a motorbike bound for Southern France. That journey became the foundation for a serious winemaking career. After earning his Enology degree in Provence, Robin trained alongside some of the most respected names in the industry, including Anne-Claude Leflaive at Domaine Leflaive, Matt Wenk of Two Hands Wines, as well as Napa Valley icons Thomas Rivers Brown and Mike Smith. That uncommon mix of Old World precision and modern California craftsmanship is woven deeply into the 2023 Apsara Petaluma Gap Chardonnay. Robin and his wife Aneeta founded Apsara Cellars with a philosophy rooted in balance, environmental stewardship, and site expression. Having originally met while studying biology and environmental science in Indonesia, the couple built the winery around thoughtful farming and minimal-intervention winemaking. Organic, biodynamic, and sustainable principles heavily influence both the vineyard approach and cellar work, allowing the Petaluma Gap’s cool-climate character to remain front and center. Named after the Sanskrit word for an angelic dancer symbolizing purity, balance, and expression, the 2023 Apsara Petaluma Gap Chardonnay captures all three beautifully. The Petaluma Gap’s cold Pacific winds and long growing season give the wine remarkable freshness and tension, while aging in French oak adds texture and quiet complexity without overwhelming the fruit. Layers of citrus, orchard fruit, mineral nuance, and subtle oak spice unfold gradually across the palate, finishing with the kind of precision and energy that keeps you returning for another sip.
